The new season got into it's stride with the Easter Trophy. With no blizzard in sight and an enticing if chilly F3 easterly there were 15 sailors eager to put into practice the winters training and rest.
A well set start line gave a close start and a hard fought first beat followed by fast reaching downwind. Terry Pressdee showed the speed of his Vortex, if only there was a little more reservoir. Andy Hind took the first reach, putting into practice the tips from the previous Tueday's training session, with a suberb second place going to Keith Ruddock and Natasha Lister and Stephen in third. Four seconds seperating 2nd and 4th place show how close the racing was.
The second race was a little less breezy and Ian Smith started well and was able to get out onfront early on and sail a very fast race to win by a good margin, Jonathan Lister, now with a useable mainsheet was back on form to take second place and Andy Hind third.Andy and Sam Wade joined in the racing in their Mirror and showed a big step forward in their performance on last year. Stephen Hiley in his first outing in a Laser was getting the better of his boat and had stopped swimming.
With the result wide open and anyone of five people still able to win overall Race three saw a battle for the best place at the starboard end of the line being shown the heels of James and Ian Whitlam in their RS200 as they had a flying start to lead the race after the first beat. At the leeward mark the leading boats elected to overule the Race Officer and rounded the way they felt was bet leading to some confusion but luckily without affecting the racing. The best efforts of the Albacore fleet to foul up Ian Smith's start were not enough to stop him getting away and sailing an even faster race, and take first place overall. This left a fierce battle being waged for second between Jonathan Lister and Andy Hind which continued to the very last leg to see Jonathan finish 8 seconds ahead. With equall points, on Jonathan took 2nd overall on a tie break with Andy Hind 3rd and Natasha Lister and Stephen Smith 4th.
Thanks to Barrie Jones, Race Officer, for setting excellent courses and dealing with the complications of computerised results and sailors who change the course as they sail it, to Vince Smith for sitting through three races in a very chilly Patrol Boat and as always to Sheila Ruddock for keeping us all warm and fed.
