SAILING INSTRUCTIONS 2006
Rules
Racing shall take place under the current ISAF rules, prescriptions of the RYA, these sailing instructions and the appropriate class rules.
Conditions of Entry
The safety of the boat and her entire management, including insurance, shall be the sole and inescapable responsibility of the owner/competitor racing the boat.
The Officers, Committee and members of Craven Sailing Club provide racing and associated activities only on the complete understanding that they or their representatives bear no responsibility for any loss, damage or injury or inconvenience to boats or persons however arising directly or indirectly from their rules, policy, or rulings during racing or related activity.
Competitors shall have a valid insurance policy for their boat covering third party claims for a minimum of £2 million.
The responsibility of the patrol boat is to help in the general organisation of racing – it should not be relied upon as a ‘rescue boat’. Patrol boat crews are generally untrained in rescue and first aid.
It is recommended that all competitors, where required by the appropriate association, shall be a member of that association and have a valid measurement certificate.
Personal buoyancy shall be worn whilst afloat, and if of the inflatable type must be inflated. Wet suits and dry suits are not an acceptable substitute for personal buoyancy.
Wet suits or dry suits must be worn when sailing from October to April inclusive.
The Race Officer may refuse to allow afloat any boat which, in his/her opinion, has buoyancy which is inadequately inflated, secured or otherwise compromised.
The Race Officer reserves the right to request evidence of conformity to class rules, and to disqualify any competitor who fails to meet these requirements.
Starting Times
As published in the Club Handbook
Should the Race Officer decide to delay the start for any reason, e.g. to change the course, at any time before the starting signal of the race, attention will be drawn to such change by two sound signals and the hoisting of I.C. flag “A.P.” until one minute before the warning signal of that race.
Courses
The club marks are numbered and lettered buoys positioned approximately as shown on the board in the clubhouse.
The course for each race will be displayed in the clubhouse before the start of that race. All buoys given in the course must be rounded. The number of laps will be infinite unless otherwise shown in the board in the clubhouse.
Starting
The start line will be displayed in the clubhouse, as part of the course for each race, before the start of that race.
Rule 30.1 (“I” flag – ‘round the ends’ rule) will not apply. If any part of the boat’s hull, crew or equipment is on the course side of the starting line at the start she shall return to the pre-start side of the line before starting, keeping clear of other competitors.
Races will be started in accordance with Rule 26 as follows:

|
One long sound signal as a local CSC informal warning only
|
|

|
I.C. flag “B” lowered, one sound signal
|
Individual recalls may be signalled by re-hoisting I.C. flag “B” to half mast, accompanied by one sound signal. No individual recall numbers will be shown. Where possible, competitors over the line will be hailed by the Race Officer, by his representatives in the rescue/committee boat, or by fellow competitors. It is the responsibility of each competitor to start correctly and those failing to do so will be disqualified.
Where there are a number of unidentified premature starters or the Race Officer is dissatisfied with the start for any reason, a general recall signal will be made by hoisting I.C. flag “First Substitute” accompanied by two sound signals.
Finishing
Unless shown otherwise on the course sheet, the finish line will be between the white mark ‘F’ on the clubhouse and a buoy ‘F’ on the water. The side to which buoy ‘F’ should be left will be displayed on the course sheet before each race. Boats need only sail through the finish line when they are finishing.
Helms must not inhibit the Race Officer from recording the numbers of other boats finishing. All helms are responsible for ensuring that their sail numbers are seen by the Race Officer.
Shortening Course
I.C. flag “S” will be displayed from the clubhouse or committee boat, accompanied by two sound signals. Races will be shortened at 50 – 55 minutes unless advised otherwise. In accordance with the Craven Sailing Club Average Lap System, the boat that is approaching the last mark of the course when the course is shortened, and all subsequent boats, should sail through the finish line after rounding the last mark. Boats which have already started the next lap when the shorten course signal is displayed should sail another lap.
Time Limit
Boats must finish within 30 minutes of the first boat to finish. Boats failing to do so will be deemed to have retired.
Protests and Requests for Redress
As a family club CSC hopes to avoid protests, assuming that boats will undertake their penalties on the water. If protesting, a protest flag must be flown promptly and all attempts made to immediately hail the boat that is perceived to have infringed - this amends ISAF Rule 61.1a.
Protests or requests for redress that cannot be resolved informally shall be written and delivered to the Race Officer in the Club House within 30 minutes of the last boat finishing the race. Protest / request for redress hearings will commence as soon as possible thereafter. The protests / requests for redress to be heard will be notified by the Race Officer in the Club House at the end of the protest time limit.
Scoring
Low Point scoring system of Appendix A will apply.
Declarations
Competitors should sign on to enter racing for the day (i.e. only once on Sundays). A declaration at the end of the race will need to be signed ONLY by competitors who wish to notify their retirement.
